Simon Carter
Simon Carter is an artist and curator, born in Chelmsford, Essex and now living in Frinton, Essex. He studied at Colchester Institute and North East London Polytechnic. Landscape is Simon's main subject, or rather, how it allows him to think about the processes of painting. He asks how peripheral vision encroaches on what is shown in a painting and about the layers that go into making a painted surface. Traditionally, these methodologies are hidden but as with brush marks Simon wants to make them all visible, and see how they might work even if the layers are re-ordered.
In 2013 Simon collaborated with artist Robert Priseman to form the artist led group Contemporary British Painting and the East Contemporary Art Collection which is the first dedicated, permanent collection of contemporary art for the East of England, housed at the University of Suffolk, Ipswich. Simon is President of Colchester Art Society and has been Artist-in-residence at the University of Essex and Firstsite, Colchester. His work is in national and international collections and he regularly exhibits in solo and group shows including solo shows with Messum's in London and Wiltshire. Simon is well respected as a curator; and in 2021 he co-curated Life with Art: Benton End and the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing at Firstsite.
