Mark Surridge
Mark Surridge is a contemporary abstract artist living and working in and near Helston, Cornwall. His studio is at Cast which is an Art Centre and Studio Complex.
His work is focused on still-life observational paintings that explore the relationships between colour, form, and composition. His works feel immediate, with a strong emphasis on colour contrast – juxtaposing bright natural tones with vivid synthetic hues. He collects elements from the surrounding landscape, including sea-weathered plastics, plants, feathers, and stones, which he carefully curates and arranges in his studio. Through his work, Mark seeks an alternative vision of beauty, addressing themes of environmental degradation, the shifting ecology, and the complex, often ambiguous relationship between humanity and the natural world. Mark grew up in London and has taught in many institutions including Falmouth University from 1997 to 2017. His work was selected for the Art Now Cornwall exhibition at Tate St Ives in 2007, confirming Mark as an artist to watch. He also has work in this year's, 2025, Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. He has exhibited in numerous solo and mixed exhibitions nationally and internationally, including a residency in 2018 on Waiheke Island in New Zealand where he held a solo exhibition at The Waiheke community Art Gallery .
