Joe Plaskett is one of Canada's most respected and established painters who before his death in 2014 received the Order of Canada in 2001 for excellence in the visual arts. Joe lived in Woodbridge, Suffolk, England between 1994 and 2014, where he painted work inspired by his Suffolk garden and friends.
Joe Plaskett studied under the well known US abstract artist Hans Hofmann but took his own work in a different direction.
Joe described himself as a romantic impressionist, and heavily influenced by Turner did the Grand Tour of Europe following in Turner's footsteps. He spent most of his painting life in Paris where he met many of the famous artists of the time including Paul Resika, David Hockney, and Mark Rothko.
He painted landscapes of a view, still life of the arrangement of objects, and portraits of the interior of a room.
In his obituary of Joe Plaskett, Alan Scholefield writing in the Guardian said of his work that it was, "saturated with light, the late still lifes have an almost religious intensity ".
During his lifetime Joe had over 65 group and solo exhibitions in Canada, and his work is in the National Gallery of Canada. Before his death Joe Plaskett set up a Foundation which continues to make a generous award to an emerging Canadian artist to live, create, and travel in Europe.
There has not been an exhibition of his work in the UK since 1978. The works on show in Gallery East are from the private collection of his assistant and companion Mario Doucet who still lives in Woodbridge, Suffolk, England.
