John Piper
John Piper is one of Cornwall's leading contemporary oil painters. He lives and works near Land's End in West Cornwall. Originally from Wiltshire, John moved to Cornwall as a schoolboy. His work is strongly influenced by this West Cornwall landscape; the moors, carns, headlands and cliffs and traditionally built Cornish cottages and farm buildings which take equal place in the landscape.
He applies paint in several layers, often with deeply etched lines allowing contrasting colours to show through. Looming skies or large expanses of moorland create a dramatic, often stark effect. Before taking up painting full time John taught painting, drawing and ceramics in schools in Penzance for twenty years. He exhibits in Cornwall, London and throughout the UK. His paintings have been shown across Europe and North America and are widely collected. He is a Member and past Chairman of the Penwith Society of Artists in St Ives, Cornwall and a former Chairman of the Newlyn Society of Artists, Cornwall.
