Roger in his workshop June 2019 (photography Amedeo Castellani)
Roger is a sculptor and fine artist living and working near the river Alde in Framlingham, Suffolk. Roger says about his work:

"The estuary on the river Alde has been my source of inspiration for the last 4 years or so. Whether it is searching at low tide for wood, worn by time and tide or collecting fragments from boat yards, these found elements are relics of a history and time gone by. I am revealing the layers of history and life these relics once had. I do this by shaping and carving, releasing the soul and character of the human form within. When working on groups of figures I have in the mind the recent migration and movement of people from troubled lands. The river where I find the elements is a great conduit for this movement of people and sharing of cultures".

Roger has recently been translating his sculptures into bronze which adds a layer of permanence, and follows a centuries old tradition as if these could have been carved in the middle ages.
As well as three dimensional sculpture, Roger has created wall hanging constructions which he forms through collaging found elements gathered from local boat yards, bringing together natural colour and shape to add context.

Roger started creative life as a graphic designer, having graduated from Kingston Upon Thames University. As a graphic designer he created the Wall's ice cream logo and Formula One identity.

Roger has exhibited at:
Piers Feetham Gallery London, Medici Gallery London, Thompson's Gallery London, The Fry Art Gallery Saffron Walden, Alde Valley Spring festival Suffolk, Peter Pears Gallery Aldeburgh, Strand Gallery Aldeburgh, and the Wildlife Gallery Lavenham.
Writing about Roger's recent exhibition, Time and Tide, Anthony Horowitz says:
"There is an old -fashioned, even a pagan feel to the figures. They could have been carved in the middle Ages by long lost ancestors or pilgrims. His work is intensely Suffolk based by which I mean that it couldn't have been created anywhere else. I would call it poetic. For although Time and Tide may have been created with "minimal intervention" (Roger's words) just as a haiku only contains three lines, it has both the substance and the resonance which are surely the test of all true art".
